Black Diamonds

I have only been skiing 5 times but I am getting pretty good at it. I took a private lesson on my second time. I am comfortable on all the blue runs. My turns are really good, and I can stop well on both sides. I feel I am ready to go on some Black Diamonds, but every time I try it i can’t turn and I fall! Why is this?

If your turns are really good, you should be able to engage your edges along the full length of the ski to either side. I suspect that you are making a skidded turn rather than a true carve, also your weight is probably too far back during the steep turns, hence your skiis are running away with you and you fall back to the inside of each turn.
From this I would take you back to a green slope and practice edge control (engage and release) until I could leave just 2 thin tracks in the snow. Then shape each turn so my speed was slower coming out of each turn than when I entered the turn, your hips must stay above your boots, not behind them. I would also do all of these exercises without touching my poles to the snow or moving my hands around in a balancing attempt. Ask your instructor to verify all of this keep practicing.

Bob Dylan Black Diamond Bay with lyrics, track 8 off the abum desire.

Up on the white veranda
She wears a necktie and a Panama hat
Her passport shows another face
From another time and place
She looks nothing like that
And all the remnants of her recent past
Are scattered in the wild wind
She walks across the marble floor
Where a voice from the gambling room is calling her to come on in
She smiles, walks the other way
As the last ship sails and the moon fades away
From Black Diamond Bay.

As the morning light breaks open the Greek comes down
And he asks for a rope and a pen that will write
“Pardon monsieur” the desk clerk says
Carefully removes his fez
“Am I hearing you right ?”
And as the yellow fog is lifting
The Greek is quickly heading for the second floor
She passes him on the spiral staircase
Thinking he’s the Sovjet Ambassador
She starts to speak, but he walks away
As the storm clouds rise and the palm branches away
On Black Diamond Bay.

A soldier sits beneath the fan
Doing business with a tiny man who sells him a ring
Lightning strikes, the light blow out
The desk clerk wakes and begins to shout
“Can you see anything ?”
Then the Greek appears on the second floor
In his bare feet with a rope around his neck
While a loser in the gambling room lights up a candle
Says “Open up another deck”
But the dealer say “Attendez-vous, s’il vous pl it”
As the rain beats down and the cranes fly away
From Black Diamond Bay.

The desk clerk heard the woman laugh
As he looked around the aftermath and the soldier got tough
He tried to grab the woman’s hand
Said, “Here’s a ring it cost a grand”
She said, “That ain’t enough”
Then she ran upstairs to pack her bags
While a horse-drawn taxi waited at the curb
She passed the door that the Greek had locked
Where a handwritten sign read, “Do not disturb”
She knocked on it anyway
As the sun went down and the music did play
On Black Diamond Bay.

“I’ve got to talk to someone quick !”
But the Greek said, “Go away” and he kicked the chair to the floor
He hung there from the chandelier
She cried, “Help there’s danger near
Please open op the door”
Then the volcano erupted
And the lava flowed down from the mountain high above
The soldier and the tiny man were crouched in the corner
Thinking of forbidden love
But the desk clerk said “It happens every day”
As the stars fell down and the fields burned away
On Black Diamond Bay.

As the island slowly sank
The loser finally broke the bank in the gambling room
The dealer said “It’s too late now
You can take you money, but I don’t know how
You’ll spend it in the tomb”
The tiny man bit the soldier’s ear
As the floor caved in and the boiler in the basemen blew
While she’s out on the balcony where a stranger tell her
“My darling je vous aime beacoup”
She sheds a tear and then begins to pray
As the fire burns on and the smoke drifts away
From Black Diamond Bay.

I was siting home alone one night in LA
Watching old Cronkite on the seven o’clock news
It seems there was an earthquake that
Left nothing but a Panama hat
And a pair of old Greek shoes
Didn’t seem like much was happening
So I turned it off and went to grab another beer
Seems like every time you turn around
There’s another hard-luck story that you’re gonna hear
And there’s really nothing anyone can say
And I never did plan to go anyway
To Black Diamond Bay.

Can you really see the flaws in SI quality Black Diamonds? They are a pair of princess cut stud earrings.

Are the VS black diamonds that much better?

Just wondering if they are different since they are black rather than a normal diamond. Thanks a lot!

Depending on who graded these diamonds SI clarity should be very clean to the naked eye. A trained professional/eye could tell the difference between SI and VS. When it comes to black diamonds, if they are color enhanced SI clarity stones you should be fine. Some "black diamonds" are just heavily included rating I3 or worse.

Good Luck!

Black Diamond Heavies

August 17, 2009

There are two songs here “Guess You Gone And ed It All Up” and “Ole Brown Sugar.”

I’ve been looking forward to this show for a while. I discovered this band several months ago after hearing them on the Savage Kick podcast and fell in love with their raw, bluesy, lo-fi sound. They’re a two-piece (piano/organ and drums) and their home base is in Louisville, KY., but for the last six months they’ve been tearing up stages all over Europe and the States. This date in St. Louis was the last of this tour. You should be able to find their Alive Records release at your local record store, or favorite Internet retailer including iTunes.

I’m planning on buying twin tip skis this season. I like to downhill ski (black and double black) and I also go to the park sometimes. I’m just wondering if the park twin tips would work if I were to use them for downhill skiing.

I’m planning on buying these:
http://www.skis.com/product/143813/Line%2BAnthem%2BTwin%2BTip%2BSkis

Not really.
Well, you can. But I doubt you will be happy with that.

Things I noticed:
- Shorter park ski (for nimbleness), curved tail, and forward binding mounting shortens a great deal the effective edge in front, which matters most for speed and stability. So the ski does feel short, slow, and less stable on downhill.
- When carving, the timing and the pop feels different and, at times, the ski annoyingly flaps. Probably because of the foam core material, binding relocation, and different sidecut pattern. I cannot push it to pop too much and I had to get used to different timing and feel.
- Binding risers are good for carving but bad for freestyling. Having gotten used to carving with risers, without them I feel more vibrations on the feet. And I cannot carve as aggressively or I get booted out.
- Minor thing: Less carving capability tempts me to sharpen the edges but then sharp edges hook too much in the park. Kind of a dilemma, eh?

I say don’t get rid off your downhill skis. Get three pairs: park skis, downhill skis, powder skis. They are just different skis. :)
