My fiance and I have just discovered the market of black diamonds and adore the way the look. I just had a couple questions about them like are they really diamonds? Would it be bad luck to not use a "real" clear type of diamond? (Sorry, I know that sounds silly) Would you ever consider using a black diamond ring instead of the clear type? Just wanted some opinions, thanks!

Oh and if it helps, these are the ones we have picked out.

There’s no need for all the thumbs down to who ever is doing it. My goodness its a question, not a fighting invitation.

Thank you every one for your opinions and for helping me be able to research it more.

From what I understand Black Diamonds (and most colored ones) are dyed that color because they are inferior diamonds with many inclusions and off color that dyeing masks. So if that’s what you are interested in, go ahead. White diamonds are overrated anyway, and the fad was started by the DeBeers diamond cartel.

I think your choices are lovely.

I’ve never understood why wedding and engagement have to be "traditional". One of my dearest friends in the world has a black titanium ring, with a black diamond in the center (in a tension setting), and has two, bezel set, white diamonds (one on each side fo the black diamond). I think the ring is GORGEOUS!

But people have told her that her ring is "ugly, trashy, useless, not feminine enough, to manly." I can’t fathom a prettier non-traditional ring myself.

I really enjoy finding really interesting rings. I’ve found sites that cater to my love of ‘non-traditional’ rings. As a matter of fact I am having a new wedding/engagement ring made for me when my husband deploys next year to Bahrain. Mine will be made out of platinum and diamonds. But I don’t want a "traditional" ring. To me that is BORING!

So my question to you folks out there reading this question. What is wrong with not having a "traditional" wedding/engagement ring? Let me hear your opinions. Please be tactful. Thanks.

Wow your friends ring does sound cool. It doesn’t have to be traditional if you don’t want it too. It’s really a personal preference, same with the wedding, the day is about you and your husband to be, make it want you want.

Web site links would be helpful.

"Carbonado, commonly known as the ‘Black Diamond,’ is a natural polycrystalline diamond found in alluvial deposits in the Central African Republic and Brazil. Its natural colour is black or dark grey, and it is more porous than other diamonds." – Wikipedia

Polycrystalline means that there are many many little diamond crystals that are stuck together with small graphytic molecules. Normal diamonds are "single" crystals – which means the the whole thing has a latticed 3D structure which repeats throughout. Polycrystalline diamonds have much different physical properties – read the Wikipedia article for further info.
